The Archives

The history of the Archives goes back to the years of the Museum's foundation. Even in his program for the Museum set down in 1908, Wilhelm Franz Exner dedicated himself to their purpose and function. The collections were built up by appealing to institutions, public authorities, and industrial companies to make their holdings over to the Museum.
The materials, sources, and documents of today's Archives occupy 1.5 kilometers of shelf space. The collections grow continuously. The source materials available in the Archives elucidate a variety of issues concerning epistemology, the history of science, of technology, and of industry. The special character and the importance of the holdings result from both the diversity of the material and from the large proportion of images.
